Special radio broadcasts will remind drivers about road safety rules

25 April 2014

Short broadcasts about various scientific facts will explain to radio listeners why they must brake in advance of pedestrian crossings.

These road safety adverts are part of the large-scale public awareness campaign “Brake in Advance!” The campaign is an initiative of the General Department of Road Traffic Safety of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Russian Association of Motor Insurers, with information support provided by NGO Road Safety Russia.

The adverts will be broadcast throughout the whole campaign on the federal radio stations Avtoradio and Europe Plus. The campaign has also received support from many regional radio stations, including stations in Stavropol Krai, Perm Krai and the Yaroslavl, Novgorod and Omsk regions. Regional stations have already been broadcasting the road safety adverts.

The five adverts cover five scientific facts, including: the distance illuminated by dipped headlights; the stopping distance of a vehicle travelling at 60km per hour; when and by whom the first disc brakes were patented; and how often humans blink. But the main message in each case is that drivers must be more careful on the roads and brake in advance of pedestrian crossings.

As most people have the radio on when they are driving, the “Brake in Advance!” campaign organisers chose radio as a means of addressing drivers and persuading them to treat pedestrians with respect.

The campaign will use these adverts not only to appeal to drivers to be more attentive behind the wheel, but also to invite them to take part in free training courses in “The Art of Braking”. During these courses, professional instructors will help drivers master the theory and practice of safe braking, assess road situations more quickly, and take correct decisions in time. Prizes will be awarded to the drivers demonstrating the best skills. These will include thermal mugs inscribed “Be warmer towards pedestrians”.
