NGO Road Safety Russia presents its projects to International Congress on Road Safety

29 September 2014

The V International Congress “Road Safety for the Safety of Life" was held in St. Petersburg on 25-26 September. As part of the event, there was an exhibition of road safety innovations at the Lenexpo Exhibition Complex. The Congress was officially opened by the Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Evgeny Bushmin; Deputy Russian Internal Affairs Minister police colonel general Victor Kiryanov; the Secretary General of the Council of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Alexei Sergeev, and Deputy Russian Transport Minister Nikolai Asaul. They welcomed the exhibitors and guests to the Congress and wished them success in their efforts to address the common goal of protecting the life and health of road users.

NGO Road Safety Russia presented its “Buckle Up!” project, which it implemented together with the General Department of Road Traffic Safety of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Russian Association of Motor Insurers (RAMI). Commenting on the NGO’s participation, the President of Road Safety Russia, Natalia Agre, said, “We exhibited the Parade of Matryoshka Dolls, which were created by local artists from every Federation member. Each matryoshka reflects local traditions and history. The only common feature of the designs is that each matryoshka is wearing a seatbelt. We created two more matryoshki especially for the Congress exhibition, from Simferopol and Crimea. Visitors to the exhibition could also try our simulator that replicates the sensation of a road crash at 12km per hour. We used the simulator to help explain that it is always essential to buckle up.”

The exhibition had a zone for young road users. It included the mobile “Road Safety School”, which is a project of the General Department of Road Traffic Safety of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, RAMI and Road Safety Russia.  A special training bus was used to teach children the correct behaviour when in a vehicle: the first rule is to always wear a seat belt. The unique Junior Campus educational project also took part in the exhibition. This is a long-term project of BMW Group Russia, run in partnership with Road Safety Russia. Assisted by professional educators, youngsters took part in special tests on tablet computers, watched cartoons about road safety, and built cars from construction kits.

The total exhibition area was more than 7000 square metres: 4000 square metres in pavilions, and more than 3000 square metres in the open air. In all, 85 organisations participated in the exhibition, including Russian federal ministries and departments: the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations, the Transport Ministry, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Health Ministry, and the Management Board for the federal programme “Improving Road Safety”.
