21 May 2013

On 19 May, during a visit to Russia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon met with the Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Police Colonel General Victor Kiryanov.

The two men discussed Russia’s contribution to implementation of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety. Victor Kiryanov briefed the UN Secretary-General on Russia’s progress to date and its current measures to reduce the road injury rate, which place a particular emphasis on vulnerable road users. He also shared Russian strategies for the further development of international cooperation in this field.

Ban Ki-Moon commended Russia for its recognised leadership in multilateral cooperation on road safety at the UN. He spoke in favour of Russia continuing to play an active role in promoting this issue at the UN General Assembly and in other UN forums, including in the context of setting the post-2015 global development agenda.

Russia was the initiator of the last two UN General Assembly resolutions on road safety, which were co-sponsored by more than 100 member states. In 2009, Moscow hosted the first international ministerial conference on road safety. The event laid the foundations for global cooperation in this area.
