08 March 2013

The representatives of Russian Non-governmental organisation "Road Safety Russia" took part in a Reception, organized by EASST. This Meeting become a perfect opportunity for the delegates from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and other countries to forge new working relationships and share their best practices of Road safety social campaigns. Moreover, the negociations about possible future cooperation in struggle against the new challenges and common road safety problems were held.

On 6th March 2013, the Lord Speaker Baroness D’Souza hosted an evening reception at the Lord Speaker’s apartments to raise awareness of EASST’s work in reducing road deaths in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the South Caucasus - an area where road deaths are three times higher than in Western Europe, despite smaller vehicle fleets.

The event was attended by 80 guests including EASST’s Road Safety Ambassador Nigar Jamal, EASST Chairman Lord Dubs of Battersea and senior representatives of the diplomatic, transport, business and NGO sectors. The Lord Speaker greeted guests to the River Room and referred to the “compelling statistics” including:

  • Nearly 1.3 million people are killed on the world's roads each year.

  • Annual road traffic deaths are forecast to rise to 1.9 million people by 2020.

  • Road traffic injuries are the number one cause of death for young people worldwide.

  • 90% of road fatalities occur in developing countries, though they have less than half of the world’s motor vehicles.

  • The economic cost to developing countries is at least $100 billion a year.

  • Road traffic injuries place an immense burden on hospitals and health systems.

  • Without action, the problem will continue to grow, as vehicle fleets are set to double in the ten years from 2010-2020, with most of the growth in developing countries.
