Traffic lights will become intellectual in Moscow

08 February 2012

Within the next two years the street lights in Moscow will be equipped by the system of adaptive control. As a result they will recognize the amount of cars in cross traffic and amount of pedestrians willing to cross the road. Based on this information the traffic lights will alter switching frequency depending on the current road situation.

The work is underway in Moscow to put an intellectual transportation system on stream which is designed to improve the situation on the Moscow highways ensuring the safety of all traffic participants. This system will also inform drivers about the issues up on the road. Within the framework of this wide-scale program, the street lights in Moscow will be equipped by adaptive control system. Based on innovative technologies the equipment, which is incorporated into the street lights, will analyze what amount of cars is involved in cross-flow and how many pedestrians willing to cross the street are waiting on the curb. Depending on the current traffic situation the street lights will adjust the frequency of switching of control signals. Now there are about 3 thousand streetlights in Moscow, among which only 100 are intellectual. By the end of 2012 as many as 1000 crossroads will be equipped by intellectual streetlights.

Moscow authorities are planning to introduce intellectual transportation system at 65% of the Moscow territory this year. In 2013 the whole city will be covered by this intellectual transport system. Thus, for instance, currently there are 150 sets of photo and video recording systems installed on the Moscow streets. The data generated by these systems is fed into the unified situational Centre of the Traffic Police in Moscow. The information is processed in this Centre and the situation on the road streets is kept under control. The instructions are sent to patrol cars, free passage of ambulance cars and fire cars is ensured. In 2012 the number of these video cameras will be increased to 400.
