The child seat day will be celebrated by giving memos to drivers

24 August 2011

It is expected that in all major cities the last weekend of August will be marked by inflow of cars. Children with parents will go in cars to the shopping areas. The shopping will deal with preparing to the new school semester. On the eve of September 1 the Tyumen Region Traffic police will have a "Day of the child seat" campaign. Traffic patrol inspectors will remind parents and drivers about the guidelines of safe transportation of children in cars: children under 12 should have restraints such as a car seat or harness.
The activity will have the title: "The child is the most important passenger!". "I am a child and I have the right to stay safe in road traffic". The memo with the text the traffic patrol inspectors will distribute among the drivers. The brochure clearly explains the need of using car seats.
Children are the most vulnerable category of road users. The statistics of the traffic police shows that during the seven months of 2011 as many as 270 children were killed on the Russian roads, 4767 children riding inside cars were injured. These numbers are higher than the casualty indicators collected over the same period of 2010 by 10.2% and 3.5% respectively. According to the polls, only a quarter of Russian population is using restraining harness on a permanent basis. The facts show that if a child is driving inside a restraint the fatality rate in a road traffic accident is reduced by 71% among babies and by 54% among children older than 2.
In addition to interviews among drivers the Traffic Police in the Tyumen region will strengthen control over the use of child car seats and seat belts. Starting with 2007 it is prohibited in Russia to carry children younger than 12 years without using restraints. Violators are issued tickets.
