Traffic police will protect the rights of bus passengers

26 August 2011

Recently in Russia there was another surge of accidents involving buses. In most cases these accidents are very grave from the consequences standpoint.
"Unfortunately, the number of accidents caused by bus drivers who violate traffic rules remains pretty high, despite the declining trend in statistics," - said Deputy Head of the regulation and promotion of the road safety issues in Traffic Police reporting to the Russian Interior Ministry police colonel Vladimir Shevchenko. According to statistics, over the seven months there were 2266 such incidents that is 5.1% less than the number for the same period last year.
Here are but few recent examples.
In Novosibirsk at the 53 km of M-53 highway a passenger bus collided with a truck transporting construction materials. Both vehicles turned over and caught fire. As a result, five bus passengers were killed and 12 more with injuries of varying severity were hospitalized.
As a result of collision of the "PAZ" bus which entered the oncoming traffic lane and "KamAZ" in Udmurtia five people were killed and 12 wounded.
The Stavropol Territory a driver of a bus transporting 45 passengers lost control of the vehicle and ditched following ramming a tree. The bottom line was the following - one dead and eight injured.
"We can conclude that in all accidents the negative role was played by the human factor, - said Vladimir Shevchenko. - The bus drivers did not have enough experience to prevent accidents which implies that HR functions in passenger transportation companies are not paying adequate attention while hiring employees".
Vladimir Shevchenko pointed out that on the eve of September 1 traffic police officers are involved technical auditing of school buses and conduct special briefing with school bus drivers. "This activity pursues the goal of improving the safety standard in public transport, primarily the safety of the vehicles engaged in transporting children, - he said. – A special attention is paid to equipping buses with safety belts, which, according to numerous studies, can dramatically reduce the severity of consequences of the road accidents".
