The 61st Universal Children's Day

20 November 2015

By resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. The Assembly suggested to governments that the Day be observed on the date and in the way which each considers appropriate. The date 20 November marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.

Road Safety Russia expresses our support of the Children’s Day and urges you to be attentive to problems of childhood, the resolution of which depends entirely on us, the adults. Special attention should be paid to children as the most unprotected road users. According to the UN, more than 500 accidents involving children happen every day. The problem of child road safety s a global one. However, there are some simple but effective ways to prevent child death and injuries on the road.

  1. Every child should have their own car seat, chosen according to the child’s height, weight, and age, and certified (preferably, i-Size).
  2. Light reflective elements are of high importance! In nighttime, they help to increase your child’s visibility from 50-100 to 250-300 meters. The best reflective elements come in round or rectangular shapes, white or lemon colored.
  3. Teaching your child traffic rules is essential. Road safety culture must be taught from the early years and must become part of your everyday life.
  4. You must not leave your child in the car alone. Not even for a minute. Cars can be stolen, hit, overheated.
  5. If your child is on a bicycle – they are active road users. A bicycle will be followed by a scooter, then – by a motorcycle. That is why it is very important to teach your child that helmets are obligatory, even if they are only riding a bicycle.
  6. If you are behind the wheel, remember – children may appear on the road very suddenly. In order to avoid unnecessary risks on the road both for you and for children, follow the traffic rules, follow the speed limits, be attentive and careful on the road.
  7. Remember – most accidents involving children happen during holidays and weekends. August is the most dangerous months when it comes to child road safety.

This year, on the Universal Children’s Day, Road Safety Russia jointly with the State Road Traffic Inspectorate brought to notice the problems of multi-child families. Representatives of the State Road Traffic Inspectorate and Road Safety Russia carried out a special event in Khimki city, Moscow region. Road safety experts shared their knowledge with multi-child families in the event highlighting the importance of light reflective elements in matters of road safety.

Road Safety Russia presented hundreds of backpacks, charms, and shoe bags with high-quality reflective elements to all the participants of the event. Father with many children, Vitaliy Cavelyev, received a special surprise – sets of reflective elements for his older children, and a car seat for his youngest daughter.
