Save the Date! Second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety 18 - 19 November 2015 Brasilia, Brazil

17 July 2014

On 10 April 2014 a new UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution - "Improving global road safety" - welcomed the offer of the Government of Brazil to host the Second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety. As expressed in the UNGA resolution, the purpose of the conference is to bring together ministers of transport, health, education and interior to review progress in implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 and in meeting the Decade of Action's goal. The conference, timely due to its hosting during the final negotiations around the post-2015 development agenda, will also provide an opportunity for Member States to exchange information and best practices in road safety. It is envisioned that the conference will convene 1500 - 2000 participants, including ministers and their delegations including representatives of civil society from all countries.

To initiate preparations for the Second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety, the Government of Brazil has established a national organizing committee led by the Ministry of Health, and involving a number of other ministries. An international organizing committee, in the form of the Friends of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, will offer guidance in preparing the event by supporting development of the programme, identification of keynote speakers and dissemination of information about the conference. Formal letters of invitation will soon be issued by the Government of Brazil to all countries through Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

The Second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety will build on the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. Hosted by the Government of the Russian Federation in 2009, this conference convened more than 70 ministers of transport, health and interior, and 1500 other participants from around the world. Its key outcome was a declaration calling for the Decade of Action. Launched on 11 May 2011, the Decade of Action seeks to save 5 million lives over the ten-year period. This Second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety is a unique opportunity to add further impetus to the Decade of Action, and all road safety advocates around the world are encouraged to support preparations and promote participation.
