Latest Russian accident statistics published

19 August 2014

The Russian Department of Road Safety has published statistics for the first seven months of this year. The expert centre, Road Safety Russia, has analysed the information and has concluded that the situation on the roads has improved. During the first seven months of 2014, the number of road traffic accidents fell by 1.5% and the number of victims by 2.6%.

The numbers of people killed and injured when pedestrians fail to use pedestrian crossings has continued to fall (maintaining the positive trend noted in May and June this year). In July there were 906 such accidents, which is 6.6% lower than during the same period last year. The figures for the numbers killed or injured also shows a positive trend, with reductions of 6.3% and 5.9%.

According to the data, the numbers of road traffic accidents involving children went down by 4.1%, the number killed by 10.8% and the number injured by 4.4%. Nevertheless, the problem of child fatalities on the roads is one of the key road safety issues. Child pedestrians and passengers are the most vulnerable road users. Due to their age, they cannot take responsibility for their own safety – that has to be the role of adults.

Separate mention should be made of safety for children travelling as passengers. Despite the fact that child restraints are being widely popularised, by no means all parents are rushing to acquire them, or they may use cheap, poor-quality car seats. This leads to victims among our youngest road users. However, during the period between January and July this year, there has been a positive development: the number of incidents involving children travelling as passengers has fallen by 1.1%, the number of children injured by 1.4% and the number of fatalities decreased by 6.2%.

Today, exceeding the speed limit or failing to adjust speed to suit road conditions is one of the main causes of road traffic accidents, as a result of which thousands of people are killed or sustain injuries every year. Nevertheless, this has also been where the greatest reductions in incidents have been recorded. Over the first seven months of this year, the number of speed-related road accidents dropped by 61.9%, with fatalities falling by 59.9% and injuries by 60.8%.

Despite these positive results, much work remains to be done around the topic of road safety. The main issues will be highlighted on 28 August by experts from Road Safety Russia at their round table event, entitled Expertise and Innovations in Road Safety. The event is supported by the Russian Department of Road Traffic Safety and the Russian Association of Motor Insurers (RAMI) and will take place during the Moscow International Automobile Salon (MAS) at the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre (Hall 19, Pavilion 3). Representatives of car manufacturers, public bodies and institutions, experts and civil society have been invited. The main aim of the event is to develop dialogue between the private and public sectors and to call for social responsibility among car industry representatives.
