Journalists and public activists ready to support road safety

15 February 2016

Senior officers of the Russian State Road Traffic Inspectorate, representatives of public authorities, journalists and public activists have discussed topical questions of road safety informational support and the formation of responsible road behavior.

The discussion was held in the Administration Hall of the Vladimir region, with participation of the Head of the Russian State Road Traffic Inspectorate Victor Nilov, the Governor of the Vladimir region Svetlana Orlova, Road Safety Russia president Natalia Agre, representatives of leading federal mass media and non-profit organizations. The meeting was held in context of the preparation for a session of the State Council of the Russian Federation dedicated to topics of road safety.

The discussion began with Svetlana Orlova highlighting the complexity of the road safety topics, their diversity and utmost importance. Road safety lies not only in laws and their implementation, it depends on personal responsibility of local authorities, departments, organizations, and, more importantly, personal responsibility of each and every road user.

Victor Nilov noted that mass media is traditionally viewed as a main instrument of informing the public on road safety and forming a responsible and careful approach among road users in matters of road safety. He advised the informational influence to cover all media areas and to be targeted and specific for every target audience, be it different road users of different ages or social groups.

Road Safety Russia president Natalia Agre mentioned that most films, series, and video spots had close to none representation of a responsible driver figure. “It is crucial to have road safety topics covered by mass media on a regular basis”, – she said.

Road safety topics today receive a great mass media coverage and wide public support. Journalists, bloggers, and social activists from many Russian regions participate in mass check-ups of drivers aimed to prevent DUIs. Various actions and promotional events take place all over Russia in order to promote road safety, most of them being not only supported but initiated by activists and bloggers.

Popularization of road safety topics in mass media becomes apparent from results of informational space monitoring. Research shows that informational activity on road safety topics has increased by more than 25 times in the last ten years.

During the meeting in the Vladimir region, journalists and social activists voiced their support and intention to establish further cooperation for the cause of improving road safety. Mass media and public representatives presented a number of propositions linked to a bigger mass media coverage of road safety topics and engagement of a wider public.

Active use of social advertising, wider blog and social media involvement, implementation of a more positive approach when it comes to discussing road safety in movies and TV programs – it’s not even a complete list of propositions voiced in the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, the participants once again highlighted the importance of cooperation between state authorities, mass media, and the public for the cause of improving road safety. Victor Nilov invited all attending to participate in the Sixth International Congress Road Safety for the Safety of Life to be held in Saint Petersburg in September.
