Head of the State Road Traffic Inspectorate at the Ministry of Interior of Russia Viktor Nilov’s address in context of the international day for protection of children

01 June 2015

Dear children and their esteemed parents,

Long-awaited summer holidays are upon us, and thousands of kids have significantly more free time than during their school year. While it is good for children to take a break, in the meantime they spend more time outdoors, crossing the roads and riding their bikes, driving in cars with their parents.

Dear children, I would like to wish you to have a holiday full of joy and celebration! Do remember about your safety – there are a couple of simple but important rules that can help you to avoid a lot of trouble. Be careful on the roads, when crossing the driveway do not distract yourselves by talking on the phone or with your friends and companions, cross the roads only at pedestrian crossings, and only if you are sure that you are visible to drivers and they are slowing down to let you pass. If you are travelling with your parents by car, do not forget about seat belts and ask your parents to buckle you up.

Today you have a right to ride a scooter or a motorbike only after graduating from a driving school and obtaining a driving license. This being said, when riding a two-wheeler, do not forget special safety equipment and stick to the speed limit.

Dear parents, it is no secret that road culture is formed primarily within the family, and parents are the most influential teachers. That is why I address you today – to point out that it is you who are responsible for your children’s knowledge on road safety. Seemingly unimportant and small violations that you are sometimes taking the liberty to commit in front of your kids, justifying the risk by your lack of time, can become the base for your children’s future behavior, or misbehavior, on the road. No doubt, it is most crucial to be careful and responsible behind the wheel. If your kids are in the car with you, do not forget to make sure of secure mounting of the child restraint system, and check if your children’s seat belts are fastened in a proper manner.

Provide your kids with light reflective elements (key chains, badges, bracelets, etc.) to help drivers notice them on the road during hours of darkness – this will make your children’s holidays that much safer.

All these rules are quite simple, but their observance has immense results and helps to save lives and preserve health of our children.

Today, on the first day of summer, with all my heart I congratulate you on the International Day For Protection Of Children. I wish the parents patience and wisdom; I wish all kids to have a happy childhood among their friends and family, wish them peace and kindness, happiness and joy. Every child deserves their happy childhood!
